Bartender at Frankfort pub a champion of the pour

The glass must be tipped just so, the timing is telltale, and creativity counts. There is an art to pouring a beer, and when it comes to mastering it, Charlie Harrington would make Arthur Guinness proud. A bartender at Tommy Nevin’s Pub in Frankfort, Harrington apparently takes as much pride in pouring Guinness’ famous stout beer as Guinness did in brewing it. The Plainfield resident easily demonstrated as much Tuesday, practicing her craft for pub customers eager to drink the results. Harrington did not disappoint. Topping off a brew, she poured a perfect shamrock shape into the creamy head as Guinness fans captured the moment on their cell phone cameras. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed. With a lot of pride — and a lot of practice — Harrington exemplified the perfect pour earlier this month, topping the [...]

DavisTweetUp to Meet at de Vere's

DavisTweetUp, a new social media networking project organized by local residents and social media professionals, Blake N. Cooper and Danielle DeBow, aims to use online networks—specifically the power of Twitter—to connect Davis, CA professionals in support of local businesses and our community. “Davis offers a world-class education at a world-class university; we have greenbelts and bikes galore; we pride ourselves on leading instead of being led. It's time for Davis to lead on a new front: Social Media.” says Cooper, a Davis native who moved back home, after spending most of the last decade working in social media at the University of Washington. “The Social Media Age brings with it endless opportunities to organize, educate, and share, but it's time for Davis to lead in helping bring 'social' out from behind the pixeled walls of our computer screens and back into the coffee [...]

New Irish pub opens in Durham

One of the owners of the Tra’Le Irish Pub & Restaurant at Brier Creek in Raleigh has joined with Durham native and food industry veteran Eric Burchfield to open another Irish pub in south Durham called Doolin’s Irish Pub & Cafe. Located in the SouthCourt building near the intersection of Shannon Road and University Drive, Doolin’s opened the day before St. Patrick’s Day, Burchfield says. Burchfield’s partner in the restaurant is Robert Beebe, who is also co-owner of the Tra’Le Irish Pub in the Brierdale shopping center near Brier Creek. Much of the decor and some menu items mirror what’s worked at Tra’Le, he says. Doolin’s, which is named after the Irish coastal village in County Claire, even recruited Tra’Le’s weekend chef, Brian George, to develop its menu of traditional Irish fare. The 2,200-square-foot restaurant seats about 70 [...]

Sensenbrenner fundraiser

For those who missed celebrating St. Patrick’s Day earlier this month — or for those whose memories of the festivities are a little fuzzy, rest easy. There’s an event for you. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner is holding an Irish whiskey tasting on Thursday at Murphy’s Irish Pub in Old Town Alexandria, a popular watering hole for the green-beer-swilling set. Glasses won’t be the only thing raised at the event, which we’re imagining is like a St. Patty’s Mulligan. It’s a fundraiser for the Wisconsin Republican. Admission prices are tiered, and each corresponds to an appropriately priced brand of Irish spirits: $1,000 puts you in the Middleton (that’s a top-shelf brand) Class; $500 in Red Breast (a slightly less expensive drink) class; and $250 in Jamesons (that’s standard-issue, not that we’d turn our noses up at it) class. Sensenbrenner knows that green isn’t just the [...]

New Orleans Bar To Transform Into Molly Malone’s South

University of Louisville basketball fans heading south to the Final Four will still get a taste of home in the bayou. It will happen thanks to a partnership with Molly Malone's and the host hotel for Cardinals fans in New Orleans. New Orleans is a city known for its jazz and blues, but this weekend there will be some Irish folk music on the way. It's part of an effort to make Louisville fans feel more at home as they root for their beloved Cards. "They wanted to bring kind of a Molly Malone's feeling to the UofL fans down in New Orleans," said Sean Dee with Molly Malone's. Hotel Intercontinental in New Orleans will serve as the host hotel for Louisville fans. Starting Wednesday, the hotel's bar, Pete's Pub, will begin to look like the Molly Malone's Irish Pub [...]
