PEL Recycling Equipment Helps Reduce Waste Costs

Waste is something that sadly plagues society; from industrial waste, to general waste found at home, waste is something that affects us all.Thankfully, PEL Recycling, a Mayo based company, are finding unique solutions to problems such as this with a radical new glass crusher that fits snuggly under the counter of any bar. Known as the ‘Baby Jaws’ (click on the image) this glass crusher reduces waste by a volume of 5:1. The immediate benefit for pub owner is that this machine allows bar staff to handle the glass from behind the bar; giving pub owners huge savings in waste expenditure as well as reducing the amount of storage space needed for waste. We spoke to Tommy Griffith, owner of PEL, about this innovative product.“If you take a place, like the Porterhouse or Lillie’s Bordello in Dublin, their issue is upstairs. [...]

Head-Shaving Event Raises $25,000 for Children's Cancer Research

More than 30 participants sat in barber chairs Sunday at the Claddagh Irish Pub in Livonia to have their heads shaved while raising more than $25,000 for children's cancer research. Volunteers for the fundraiser, which benefited the St. Baldrick's Foundation, sought donations in their name for the charity before losing their hair for the cause. More than 250 attended the event to support friends and family members who volunteered for the drastic makeover at the hands of stylists from Fantastic Sams in Plymouth. Plymouth native — and Patch blogger — Abigail Stonerook led all volunteers by raising nearly $10,000 by the end of the event, accounting for nearly half of its total intake while losing her long blonde locks. She said she raised about $800 on the eve of the event with a fundraiser at Dairy Kingin downtown Plymouth, where she [...]

Louisiana brewer's specialty has thirsty fans watching and waiting

Each year from February to May, a thirst hits the Jackson area. Those affected keep a watchful eye on grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants and bars, all waiting for the first Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager to make its way to the metro area. It's not a game. It's a hunt -- one that's grown larger thanks to social media, yearly production increases and a "Disney Vault" approach to marketing by the seasonal beer's manufacturer, Abita Brewing Co. of Covington, La. Fans of the light brew keep their smartphones close by, waiting to send out a text, a tweet or a Facebook update at a moment's notice -- "IT'S HERE!" In fact, the social media marketing for Abita Strawberry has taken off in the area, a move driven by customers and "Abita sightings." However, Facebook status updates are a [...]

O’Malley’s Irish Pub opens with large selection of beer, whiskey

The new O’Malley’s Irish Pub opens today in the formerBoomers space near 31st Street South and Meridian, and owner Rob Crandell isn’t shy about how great it’ll be. “It’ll definitely be the best Irish bar in Kansas,” he says. “A lot of places say they’re Irish bars but only have a couple of bottles of whiskey,” Crandell says. “For the Irish theme, I’m going to have 40 different Irish whiskeys and 40 different Irish beers.” He plans a total of 150 bottles of beer and 20 on tap. The taps won’t be done until Wednesday. “We’re kind of opening a little prematurely,” Crandell says. He also plans pub food, including some Irish dishes eventually. Crandell used to own Doobley’s on West Street, which closed about five months ago, and the Doobley’s at 2415 W. 31st St. South. That Doobley’s had only 2,000 square feet, and the new [...]
