Creating A Destination Pub

The definition of a destination pub is a pub that people will go out of their way to visit. Think about that for a second or two. A pub that people will drive or take public transport out of their community or neighbourhood to visit. A journey that may be inconvenient and that will almost certainly pass by other pubs or restaurants, some of them excellent and all of them competing for that customer's business. Next week, at the Irish Pubs Global Gathering event in Dublin, how to create the destination pub will be examined, dissected and subjected to intense scrutiny. Why? Because to survive and thrive in today's economy, Irish Pubs need to understand how to draw customers from both near and far….and then keep them loyal. Easier said than done. The Critical Success Factors The critical success factors [...]

Should Your Pub Have Its Own Mobile App?

Just a few years ago, buying a legacy POS system for a 150-seat pub would have set you back anywhere from $25,000-$35,000 or more plus punitive annual service contracts. The hardware was clunky and static and most of the back-end software felt like it had been designed to frustrate rather than help the operator. Roll forward to 2016 and the total outlay for the same size pub is probably less than $5,000, requiring maybe six iPads loaded with intuitive software and a €100-€200 monthly license fee to a cloud-based provider including regular updates. There is no doubt anymore about the pace at which technology is moving and changing the way we operate our pubs and restaurants every day. From cloud-based POS and scheduling software to social and digital media, there are a host of online tools available to us that [...]

5 Tips For Keeping Informed On Your Industry

Running a pub or restaurant is a busy occupation and it can often be unpredictable. That combination of busyness and unpredictability can easily prevent you and your management team from staying informed about what's happening in your industry and in related industries. Here are 5 tips for staying informed: If you have a regular management meeting, ask one manager at each meeting to present briefly (no more than five minutes) on a chosen current industry topic. The topics can be food trends, employment legislation, new craft beers or changes to any licensing regulations…or anything that educates the group.   Attend at least two hospitality industry shows per year, and if there is one event specific to your part of the industry, don't miss it.   Sign up for industry newsletters or industry sites that provide daily downloads of relevant information. 5 Things To Remember When Responding To Negative Online Reviews

Even though the negative review may seem like a personal attack, it's not. Even if some of the review is unfair or exaggerated, you need to bite your lip and simply apologise and thank them for the feedback. Trying to contradict a reviewer's opinion will come across as both defensive and disingenuous. Remember that though the reviewer refers to specific issues…inferior food, poor service etc., they are actually writing about their experience in your pub. When responding, you have to understand that your response will be a continuing part of that experience, so you need to make it as positive as possible and turn the ship around. When responding publicly to a review, know that thousands of people will read your response. In respect of someone who is looking for a place to visit, the tone of your response and [...]
