If you've ever traveled to the sunny Algarve, in the south of Portugal, you might have had a chance to see the bustling Live Music scene they've got going on, with thousands of bars catering to the whopping 22 million tourists who visit it annually. We caught up with The Guinness Brothers, Colm and Roddy, after one of their gigs in the Vilamoura Marina. They have both been playing different genres of music from a very young age, in various bands. Colm has been playing professionally from the age of 16, and Roddy from the age of 18. Shane Groarke of Cask bar in Cork has won the Southern Comfort Southern Showdown 2018 cocktail contest, after the competition final which put 11 of Ireland’s top bartenders through their paces. Shane will now go on to compete against Southern Showdown winners from the UK and Australia in July at the international final in New Orleans, birthplace of Southern Comfort. He will be joined on the trip, which coincides with the annual Tales of the Cocktail event, by second placed finalist Pat Thomas of Zozimus in Dublin. With the Southern Showdown now in its second year in Ireland, bartenders were challenged to recreate the spirit of their home town in a cocktail, just as Southern Comfort captures the spirit of New Orleans. Irish gin producers will be celebrating this World Gin Day this Saturday 9th June, as new CSO figures reveal that the value of Irish gin exports grew by a whopping 433% in the first quarter of 2018, compared to the first quarter of 2017. In the first quarter of 2018, exports of Irish gin were valued at €935,000, compared to just €175,000 in the first quarter of 2017. The figures show that half of this value came from exports to the US, with a further quarter from exports to the UK. There were also shipments of Irish Gin to both Japan and Mexico in the first quarter of 2018, which are both increasingly important new markets for Irish spirits.
