Senator Billy Lawless to open Irish Global Pubs Gathering 2016

"You can never be a prophet in your own land." If ever a statement rang true for the owners and managers of Irish pubs beyond the confines of our emerald isle, then that is it.  For Billy Lawless, it could not be more fitting and his recent appointment to the Irish Senate reaffirms his stellar work lobbying for immigration reform and in Chicago’s hospitality sector. As Illinois Senator Dick Durbin famously stated “the Lawless family is restaurant royalty in Chicago. The family start with 10 employees, now they have 300." Notably, before relocating to Chicago in the nineties at the tender age of 48; Lawless had been a prominent publican and hotelier in Galway. During this time he was President of the VFI from 1982-84.  His key action points were: - Reinforcing the importance of the pub for tourism.  - [...]

German Pub Owners Meet

In Limburg, over 50 Irish Pub Owners and Managers from Germany, representing 190 pubs, had an historic meeting on the 5th and 6th of May. Future plans were made to meet in Ireland for a 'Second Gathering' and a German representative was appointed as a Trustee and World Council member of the Irish Pubs Global Federation. In total there are estimated to be over 800 Irish themed pubs in Germany, spread through a population of 90 million with various ‘degrees of Irishness’.  Together their combined turnover is estimated at €1bn.  In a town with one lone Irishman, Paddy Byrne, owner of 'The Irish Pub’, it was his Christmas, and he suggested it was the largest Irish gathering in Limburg since the First World War!  Back then, over 2,000 Irishmen were held captive there in a prisoner-of-war camp. Jim Murdock of [...]

Building on the maiden event held at the Phoenix Park Hotel, in downtown, Washington DC, the workshop focused on several areas, notably: rising food cost, revising the layout of the pub and the experience for patrons. First Secretary for Food and Agriculture, Dr. John Dardis, from the Irish Embassy was the keynote speaker; presenting on the Origin Green concept for Irish food and stating that a gathering of this type for Irish Pub Owners/Operators was "Long Overdue".
